“Hi, I’m Amy, and I homeschool my children.” What stereotypes about homeschoolers just rushed through your mind? Go ahead, I’ll wait…
Yep. Exactly. But you know what? We’re not all the same. We’re not all separatists who live on farms, milk their own cows, and do lap books and crafts for every unit study (unit study?).
In fact, I think today most of us are 21st century homeschoolers who live life just like you do — parenting the best way we know how, running from football to soccer while trying to feed our kids something other than chicken nuggets and making sure they know their math facts.
WHO IS THIS COMMUNITY FOR?
First of all, welcome! This community is for the homeschooler who lives in the 21st century and knows that to give our kids a head start on life we have to help them move into this brave new world with all the skills they will need to succeed. Latin? Maybe. Keyboarding and Coding? Absolutely.
We’re going to talk about schooling, curriculum, and such, but this space will be more about the parents than the students. We are the ones with “boots on the ground” in this effort to educate our kids the way we feel God is calling us to. We need to encourage each other, make each other laugh, and sometimes just take a collective breath.
WHO AM I?
So, who am I? I am a happy West Texas homeschool mom. I am wife to an amazing guy who is living his dream job of ministering to university students. This, of course, means my kiddos get to be around college kids who love Jesus and I couldn’t be happier about that. I am mother to three little people: Sadie is 10, Jack is 8, and Walt is 1. We’ve homeschooled since 2009, with one year away at public school (which I’m certain you’ll hear about).
WHY THE BLACK SHEEP?
I feel sometimes like I don’t fit, you know what I mean? I don’t fit in the regular- mom world because my kid’s don’t go off to school every day, and I don’t fit in the homeschool – mom world because of all the above mentioned stereotypes. Thus, the black sheep of the “mom” family. (oh, and my daughter designed the sheep logo, she did such a great job!)
WHY DO YOU WANT TO GRAB A CUP OF COFFEE AND HANG OUT HERE?
My hope is that you can find community here. I want us to help each other be authentic in our homeschooling journey. I want us to share our hits and our misses, our rock star moments and the ones that leave us crying in the closet (because you KNOW you’ve had them, admit it). Finding like-minded people who share the unique lifestyle of homeschooling can sometimes be what makes or breaks us in our journey.
That being said, you should know you will certainly not always be hearing from me. I want to have many voices on this page giving insight to their unique homeschool experience. Like they say, “It takes a village to keep a homeschool mom from losing her marbles”. Err, I think someone said that.
WHAT DO I WANT YOU TO DO NOW?
Jump in the conversation! Comment, engage on social media, send me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org), do something to become part of the community! The more voices we have rising together in unison, the more encouraged we will feel to keep putting one foot in front of the other on this journey God has set for us.
The all time best way to be a part of this community is to subscribe with your email address. All the goodies will come directly to your inbox, plus a monthly newsletter and some encouragement notes every now and then.
If you are interested, I also write at www.piecesofamy.net about my spiritual journey and about my anxiety and depression. I would love for you to visit!
Thanks for joining in, and welcome!
